Travel and relax day. We drove the car on the autobahn from Zurich to Munich! We were confused without a speed limit but settled in around 80 miles per hour most of the way. Once arrived in the city we struggled for a bit to find a parking spot. We met a supper friendly stranger that confirmed we could probably park there overnight.
We dropped our stuff and headed out to find food. We took the subway to a more central part of town and went to a highly recommended restaurant that offered traditional Bavarian food. I had sausages and potato salad.
We ordered beer and dessert and sat and chatted with the people we were seated with. Two couples (one after another) both from Germany affirming us in our restaurant choice. Each couple was so friendly and gave us recommendations. Jaydn found an Irish pub that was close so we wrapped up with some incredible apple dessert and went to find more radlers.
In the pub we fell in love with our bar tender. He was from Dublin and chatted with us and swore like a sailor. Eventually it came up that Jaydn was a firefighter. The bartender mentioned he liked to collect patches and coins from anyone who served in the military or emergency services. He ended up whipping out his prized possessions and we saw an absolutely insane collection of coins and patches. After over 10 years as a bartender he had made friends with his patrons and collected secret service, NATO, NCIS, green Berret, Israeli Air Force, Air Marshall, and so many more coins from people I couldn't imagine meeting and befriending and receiving a gift from. After learning so much from the bartender a man who overheard our conversation came over with his own set of coins. He was an archeologist. He had helped recover ancient remnants before construction right here in Munich. We got to look at and gold coins from the graves of people buried beneath Munich dating pre 1500. One was a coin from a little girls casket and he said they used to put in precious items as the dowry for heaven. Our favorite one was a coin that we got to hold and it was owned by cleopatras suitor.... dating 45BC. It was a very neat history lesson and we were so blessed with all the kindness from everyone we met in our first day in Munich.
The archeologist told Jaydn that he was passionate about other peoples interest in archeology and thought those pieces of history shouldn't just be in museums but people should be able to hold them. That's just what he allowed us to do!
Me and Brooke snagged another snack to accompany our beer and we're back at our Airbnb at 11 to get some sleep.
Notables/highlights:
• Radlers are just the famous German beer mixed with sprite. They taste very similar to a summer shandy. We were shocked that those were the ingredients.
•Our waiter at the restaurant was very good but also scary. Each of us would order and he'd say something like "no that's not what you want" or "get this instead" we trusted him completely because we had no idea what we were doing. He didn't lead us astray and we left giggling about how stern he was about choosing our food for us.
