Day 17: Munich and Dachau

It was a sad day. I said goodbye to my travel companions thus far.

We woke up and got all of our things in the car to get out of the Airbnb. We all got on a train and went to a coffee shop right by where Alley was going to arrive at 10:20. Alley arrived right on time and I got to introduce her to Brooke, Jaydn, and Logan. I ordered a cappuccino as we chatted. By about 11 we decided it was close enough to lunch time and went back to the same restaurant we went to for our first meal in Munich.

We had our last lunch together! A traditional Bavarian meal. I ordered a beer of course. After lunch we took the train back to the car so I could get my bag. I hugged each of my buddies goodbye and we went on our own ways. The 3 to Zurich to catch their plane early tomorrow morning, and me with my back back and Alley to kill some time in Munich.

I was so grateful for this trip with Brooke, Logan, and Jaydn! I'll miss them greatly, but I'm so eager to continue on a new part of my trip. It's all part of it. I want to experience and enjoy everything here so deeply that I couldn't be sad for long.

Alley and I needed to be in Dachau at 6pm to get keys to the Airbnb so we started wandering Munich. We took a train back to Old Town. It was quite the surprise when we started walking the streets and Jaydn yelled at us through an open car window. Turns out train and car can get you from our Airbnb to old town in precisely the same amount of time. My last taste of my first leg friends.

From there Alley and I enjoyed a couple snacks and taking turns choosing which way to go. It was fun having nowhere to be. After wasting about 4 hours we took a train to Dachau and met Alexander, Alleys husband from Germany. We checked in quick with the Airbnb and then went to the grocery store to get ingredients. They were excited to treat me to a German tradition of raclette, a meal our make at the table of vegtables and meats that you eat with melted cheese.

Once back at the house we worked together chopping fresh veggies and raw meats and sipped raspberry cocktails. Then we moved to the other room to get the party started. I'll insert a photo below of our set up, but the food was phenomenal! Apparently how we did it wasn't 100% traditional but I was happy with it and it was a wonderful meal with the couple. We watched a couple episodes of the office as we finished our cocktails and put off cleaning up. Alexander had to go back to base so Alley and I both caught up with some people back home. I got to talk with both my brother Ryan and boyfriend Connor today. Both whom I miss dearly.

I'm eager to continue embracing every moment of this trip as it transforms and changes. Instead of notables I feel like I need to give a small "key" on who each of my friends are. I think the few people that read my updates all know me from different parts of my life so I just today realized that you maybe don't know my friends on this trip and I never properly introduced them!

Please imagine the full house theme song as you scroll through the rest of this post.

Joe Kenny - Where all this started. He is going to school in Zurich for his second Masters in Architecture design. Shortly after he decided he was moving to Switzerland a group started chatting about planning to visit. To know Joe is to love him, I met him my senior year of College I believe. He lived with both Jaydn and Connor. He has been a great tour guide and host! I hope to see him again In Florence.

Alley Beth - My childhood best friend! We've known eachother since diapers and are family at this point. Alley fell in love with Alexander from Hamburg Germany when he was a foreign exchange student in Minneota. Alley moved to Germany to be with Alexander. I had the honor of being in their wedding last summer. My plans to come to Germany have now been ruined twice by Covid so I'm excited to finally get some time with her!

Brooke - I met Brooke in college but wasn't friends with her right away. Slowly and pretty randomly we started spending a lot of time together and first bonded over puzzles and lotion. Weirdos. That was in 2018 and since we've gone on multiple adventures and continue to grow in friendship and weirdness. This trip has been no exception, spending so much time together has forced us to grow in more ways than one and I'm so grateful that she's been by my side through the whole thing.

Jaydn - I actually was friends with Jaydn before Brooke. We became friends at the Newman center sometime my Junior year I believe. Through the years we keep growing mutual friends and spending time together. I'm grateful for Jaydn as he's introduced me to many of my friends. Jaydn has been the Google Maps Master of the trip as well as the hand gesture extraordinaire.

Logan - I had only hung out with Logan a handful of times before this trip. We met through Jaydn. Even though I barely knew him, when I heard he was coming on the trip I was still glad! It was a blast to get to know him better on the trip and he was an incredible source of comic relief. He also had by far the best phone camera.
