Sorry for the late entry! My app would absolutely not let me post, so this has been written for a couple days.
Day 12 was very humbling. We started bright and early because both moms knee and my feet were in a lot of pain. We knew we had 18 miles to walk so we both just put our heads down and walked. The first part of the day I was able to experience lovely prayer of offering and intercession.
A few hours in we came up on the only city of the walk. We encountered a bunch of our friends in the cafe in town. A couple of them had foot issues and ultimately decided to call a cab to skip our on abojt 10 miles of the walk. Mom and I decided a rest day could save the rest of the trip as we were in rough condition. We jumped in the cab with them and headed to Lugo.
Upon arrival we couldn't check into our room. We got some coffee and tapas with the other injured pilgrims. It was nice conversation and it was good to know my feet weren't enduring quite the same abuse as normal. Even though we walked only 7ish miles that morning we immediately showered and doctored ourselves up with creams and stretches.
At this point I think my pride hurt worse than my feet knowing the rest of my pilgrim community was walking.
Mom and I laid with our feet on pillows and relaxed for a couple hours. After relaxing we went out to explore the amazing city of Lugo within its ancient Roman walls. We went and toured the cathedral and it's museums and spent some time in adoration in their incredible perpetual adoration in the main sanctuary of the Cathedral. It was all so impressive and inviting.
After our tour we stopped for a beer and slowly accumulated more friends as familiar faces walked by. Soon we had a whole table to share a meal with. We all enjoyed and I got made fun of for ordering ice cream cake as dessert. Apparently in Europe only children eat ice cream cake.
After supper mom, Kathy, Hank and Lydia went to bed and Andy, jack and I met up with Francios for a couple more beers. We found the coolest little party street and drank beer as they constantly brought out tapas. François ate them all as he was the only one hungry.
By 2 pm the bar decided to close and so we had to all separate to our accommodations. Mom was of course sleeping when I got him from the fun night.
Day 13:
Today mom and I both slept in thanks to a very dark room. When we woke up naturally we realized it was 9am! Apparently we needed rest (or I was out till 2). We got our packs ready and went and found breakfast. By the time we ate and got on the road it was almost 11am! A very late start for us.
We couldn’t find food all day and it was 90% road walking today. So it was very monotonous and slightly miserable. It drew us back and forth from prayer to conversation and then we both decided we had enough and even listened to some music today. This feels like cheating but it was a nice change of pace.
We did get to see a small cattle drive which was fun. One of the cows decided it didn’t want to go through the gate opening and instead jumped halfway over the gate. It was quite the drama. We left before the farmer succeeded in freeing the creature.
About 12 miles in there was an albergue. We flipped a coin to decide if we wanted to stay there or continue on another 5 miles to Ferriera. Tails won, so we walked more. I think we regretted our decision a little bit as the rest of the walk was tough that late in the day…. But I think we’ll be thanking ourselves for a short 12 miles day tomorrow!
Lugo is a common start for a lot of people to di the bare minimum to get the credentials for the Camino. So we saw a lot of new faces. In our normal evening beer we met two nice young American women. We are so confused at where all our friends are as we only saw Andy and Kathy.
This was plenty ok and they invited us to dinner. It was quite an uneventful evening because of how late we arrived in town.
I’m happy I’m getting writing in! Keep praying for my sore feet and moms knees in the downhill!
